Beef Noodle - Kau Kee Restaurant (Gough Street, Central)
Beef Noodle - Kau Kee Restaurant (Gough Street, Central)
  • Order: Beef brisket bihun soup, curry beef tendon and brisket with thick noodle
  • Verdict: I liked the beef brisket mihun soup very much as the soup base tasted of beefy goodness and mihun absorbed all of them generously. Beef brisket was pretty lean, soft along with slight resistance. Curry beef noodle was too spicy, even to my Malaysian standard, and had more tendon than brisket.

Polo Bun and HK Milk Tea - Kam Wah Cafe (Bute Street, Mong Kok)
  • Order: Polo bun, HK milk tea
  • Verdict: Polo Yau could have been better with more evenly spread butter and glazed bun on both surfaces containing the bun. Texture wise, it was fluffy when it was served warm. HK milk tea was similar to both Lan Fong Yuen's and 集興荼餐廳's.

  • Order: Dumpling wan tan mee
  • Verdict: The texture of wan tan mee was very very very springy; the soup was very pure and I actually finished all the soup! Oh, that dumpling was really a jackpot. Crunchy and fresh, these people in Mak Man Kee were really generous!

  • Order: Crunchy baked char siew pau, fresh prawn siew mai king, crystal har gao, beef ball, peanut and pork rib porridge, ma lai kuih, chee cheong fun with honey glazed char siew fillings
  • Verdict: You must try their crunchy baked char siew pau. Imagine the crunchy biscuit shattered into tiny little pieces as you sink your teeth in it and as your teeth sinks deeper, it reaches the generous, juicy and flavourful char siew fillings. It was simply heavenly!! Oh, their beef ball, siew mai, and porridge were quite good too!

Dessert - Hui Lau Shan (Salisbury Street, Tsim Sha Tsui)
  • Order: Mango dessert with coconut milk and red glutinous beans, mango mochi
  • Verdict: Mochi was soft and chewy on the outside and filled with mango cubes in thick mango lava. Mango dessert on the other hand was disappointing with its outright sour.

Steamboat Buffet - Little Sheep (Argylee Street, Mong Kok)
  • Order: Steamboat buffet
  • Verdict: Meat selection was of good quality and most of the items were refillable. Soup were good, just that I did not get to throw some scallops to make it all the better. Was it value for money? Probably not for a small eater like me who doesn't fancy seafood with shells.

Food Hunting List: Kota Kinabalu

Hello, thank you for your visit!

I hope you are able to get some ideas from reading my posts when planning your travel to places like Kota Kinabalu, Hong Kong, Japan etc.

Instead of the must-try or famous lists of food to try, I thought it would be helpful to have a summary for each travelogue, listing all the food places I personally hunted (and what I thought of them), be it GOOD or BAD (so you will know which to avoid).

Without further ado, this is the #FoodHuntingListKK.

Bak Kut Teh - Yu Yee (Gaya Street)

Tuaran Mee and 3 Layer Tea - Seng Hing Coffee Shop (Lorong Sinsuran 2B)
  • Order: 2 portions of Tuaran Mee and 3 Layer Tea
  • Verdict: Noodles was very eggy and springy. Char siew was tender and sweet. All in all a good balance between savory and sweet. I liked how their arrange the 3 layer tea (unlike those in KL). It was an exciting experience to enjoy my tea both in layers and in mixture.

Steakhouse - Flames (Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu)
Steakhouse - Flames (Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu)
  • Order: Fish head consomme with prawn tortellini and chinese watercress, 220g medium rare black angus ribeye with caramel balsamic shallot juice, seared portobello mushroom, garlic mashed potatoes
  • Verdict: Consomme was oily and less flavourful than we thought, though prawn tortellini itself was decent. Ribeye was tender and perfectly cooked to our request, all the better with caramel balsamic shallot juice which totally enhanced the flavour. Mushrooms were juicy and flavourful, mashed potatoes were simply lovely.

Wine Mee Sua and Yee Mee - Kedai Kopi Kinabalu (Gaya Street)
  • Order: 1 portion of wine mee sua and 1 portion of yee mee

Japan Travelogue: Last Day in Ueno (2 Nov 2014)

The day had finally came for us to pack our bags and get ourselves back to Malaysia. On a bright note, we still had about 8 hours to roam around Ueno. So we started our day with scrumptious breakfast in Yayoiken やよい軒.

IMG_5821
Yayoiken やよい軒 @ Ueno
There were plenty of teishoku for one to choose from in Yayoiken やよい軒. Once you have made up your mind, just proceed to the ticket vending machine, make your order, and pay the displayed sum. Yes, CASH basis only.

My Tonkatsu Set @ Yayoiken やよい軒
After our terrible tonkatsu experience in Ootoya 大户屋, it was quite a difficult decision to give tonkatsu another try but hey, this tonkatsu set of mine was really worth every bank for buck!

Its crispiness was no doubt an outcome of years of practice and experience: it landed right on the fine line between under or over fried. Wrapped in the nest of crispy skin was the tender loving pork chop so juicy that I almost cried in tears.

Enough for exaggeration. My point is it was really really good and you have to try it if you have gotten the chance.

Total Damage for 2 Pax = 1,870yen (it is cheaper than ramen, which is usually priced at 1,000yen)

Mario and Team on the road @ Ueno
While we were walking towards Ueno Park, we saw this cute parade of Mario and team, all dressed up for the Sunday fun. Those vehicles they were driving was totally functional, I was in awe!

IMG_5826
National Museum of Nature and Science @ Ueno Park
Ueno Park is a large public park, which houses various museums, monuments and attractions of which you can literally spend whole day here. The tanner half was naturally inclined to nature and science, hence here we were at National Museum of Nature and Science, only to find out that it was closed for renovation :(

Autumn Colors @ Ueno Park
Aimless we were, we wandered around the open air park and enjoyed the beautiful autumn colors and chilly autumn air.

Crowds @ Ueno Park
To our surprise, there were plenty locals whom actually spend their weekends here too. I believed it was due to several exhibitions happening on this particular day, e.g. green energy/energy conservation, art.

Green tea soft serve from a truck out side Ueno Park (350yen)
Just when we were exiting Ueno Park, we stumbled across an ice cream truck. Since it was our last day in Japan, we thought might as well give the green tea ice cream a try (FYI green tea is not a flavour I would usually order but hey, I was in Japan and it ought to be good).

For about RM10, this soft serve did not fail me: the green tea flavour was more natural than most in Malaysia's and the texture was really creamy.

Total Damage = 350yen

IMG_5820
Lemon Water (100yen)
We also grabbed some refreshing yet not cloyingly sweet lemon water from those 100yen vending machines to quench our thirst while we continued to explore Ueno until 5pm, when we stopped by McDonald to grab some quick bites before heading to Haneda International Airport.

IMG_5837
Rokurinsha @ Haneda International Airport (Departure Area)
I must commend Japan for its great connectivity. You can easily take a train from any train station in Tokyo to Haneda-Airport International Terminal Station, which save you plenty $$ from taking any taxi, not forgetting the possible traffic jam too!

IMG_5838
Tsukemen @ Rokurinsha
We arrived at Haneda International Airport about 3 hours earlier than our flight. By then, our shared burger was fully digested, hence the proper meal at Rokurinsha in the departure area was warranted.

As Rokurinsha is all about the Tsukemen, I ordered just that. Their noodles was made broad and thick  - it was akin to loh mee but denser - giving it more chewy character. The broth was thick and super flavourful that I found it hard to enjoy.

Total Damage for 2 Pax = 2,050yen

IN SUMMARY,

My personal dining ranking (5 being the full score) based on following criteria are:

  • Ambiance
    • Yayoiken やよい軒 - 4/5
    • Rokurinsha @ Haneda International Airport - 4/5
  • Price

    • Rokurinsha @ Haneda International Airport - 4/5

    • Rokurinsha @ Haneda International Airport - 3/5
  • Verdict
    • Yayoiken やよい軒 - Cheap cheap and good good! Must eat!
    • Rokurinsha @ Haneda International Airport - Maybe you should try their soup version.
